(Lilly 4) Will he ever become rich? When and how?

woman-counting-moneyThis is probably one of the most compelling questions of our days. Will I be rich? What can I do in order to make money? As we see, this question already tormented Lillyโ€™s clients in the 17th Century. Lilly uses this chart example on p. 177 of his Christian Astrology to illustrate several interesting techniques.

Lillyโ€™s client asked him four questions, all linked together, which is the reason why I will look at all of them in this post. The questions concerning the chart shown below are:

  • If the client should be rich or subsist of himself without marriage?
  • By what means he should obtain wealth?
  • When he would attain wealth?
  • If the wealth would continue

In his introducing paragraphs, Lilly makes clear, that there is a difference whether a person is asking a general question (will I ever be rich) or if he is expecting some kind of wealth from a particular person or situation.

The general questions are diveded into 2 steps:

1) ย We have to look for some kind of โ€œpromiseโ€, given by positive aspects or placements of

  • The second house and its ruler
  • The Moon
  • Part of Fortune

Check for:

Angularity always shows in an horary some kind of importance. In this case, substance. Thus, if the question is about money, an angular significator shows that there will be. In a succedent house there will be less money and in a cadent there wonโ€™t be any. This may serve as a rough and ready rule.

The speed of a planet describes some kind of willingness to perform its promise. It shows straightforwardness and determination. A slow moving planet shows insecurity while a retrograde planet has changed its objectives, and rather describes a loss than a growth of income.

The aspects of planets in the second house and of its ruler give details about how money will come in. Especially a positive aspect between the planets in the 2nd house and the ruler of the 2nd is important.

So letโ€™s see in detail what we have to look for in a chart in order to โ€œfind moneyโ€:

  • conjunction between Lord AC (or Moon) and the 2nd house ruler
  • sextile or trine between Lord AC (or Moon) and the 2nd house ruler
  • Jupiter or Venus cast a sextile or trine to Pars Fortuna or are conjunct with it
  • Ruler 2nd house is in the 1st house
  • AC ruler o (or Moon) is in the 2nd house
  • Transfer of light by any planet from the 2nd house ruler to the AC ruler
  • Benevolent planets[1] cast their sextile or trine the cusp of the AC or Pars Fortuna
  • Any fixed stars of the nature of Venus or Jupiter are on the 2nd house cusp
  • Jupiter or Venus or the North Node are in the 2nd house

2) After having discovered that there is a promise of wealth, we can now check where the money comes from:

  • From which house the ruler of the 2nd (or the Moon) does receive a good aspect?
  • Which house does the Moon rule?
  • Which house is Fortuna in?
  • Which house is ruled by Fortunaโ€™s disposer?

Here is a ready to go list:

If the ruler of the 2nd house (its cusp, or the Moon, or Fortuna) receives (or casts) an aspect to:

[table id=12 /]

Let us now apply these rules to Lillyโ€™s chart.

First Lilly checks the general conditions of the chart:

  • Nearly all of the planets are either angular or in succedant houses. The two benefics are swift in motion. There are no hard aspects with the malefics.
  • Venus is close to Regulus, one of the most favorable fixed stars:

Regulus, if culminating gives honor, preferment, goof fortune, high office under government, military success(…)[2]

  • The Moon is increasing in light. The increase of light is associated with growth, while the decreasing of light is linked to harvest or also loss.
  • Jupiter is culminating and is thus the most elevated planet in the chart. He naturally describes wealth, and in this position, that wealth becomes visible.

These planetary positions lead Lilly to a first general statement: his client would live in good rank and quality among his neighbors.[3]

Ok, but โ€œgood rankโ€ does not really mean the same as โ€œrichโ€.

This is why Lilly examines now closely the 2nd house ruler.

  • The 2nd house ruler Mars is angular in the 1st Mars also disposes of Pars Fortuna in the 1st house and is conjunct the fixed star Spica at (in Lillyโ€™s times) 18ยฐ Libra.

[Spica] gives success, renown, riches, a sweet disposition, love of art and science, unscrupulousness, unfruitfulness and injustice to innocence. With Mars: Popular, social success, may have good judgement and quick judgement (…)[4]

  • Jupiter (wealth) in his exaltation and angular casts a square to the AC and Mars, the ruler of the 2nd But Libra is a sign of long ascension, which, according to Lilly (p. 182), makes the square rather a trine aspect, as the aspect was kind of drawn out.
  • The Moon just separated first from Mars (2nd house ruler) and then from Mercury and is now transferring their light to Venus, the ruler of the AC. This technique is quite unusual, as we normally consider only the last aspect as to be transferred (in light), but in this case, probably because the planets are in so close orb (less than 1ยฐ), Lilly considers both as a connected event.
  • The Moon is disposed by the Sun, which is strong, swift and without negative aspects.
  • Pars Fortuna is in a fixed sign, disposed by Mars and the latter in his own terms, and thus self-determined.

All indications show, that the querent will attain an estate and have fortune in his life, but attain it with labor and effort, because the 2nd house is ruled by a malefic. Nevertheless, Mars also rules the 7th house, so his wealth will come from his wife, in other words, without marriage he will not become rich.

The Lord of the 1st house and of the 2nd house conjunct in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 10th, 11th gives the best indication of continuous wealth. Also a sextile or trine with mutual reception show the same. If they apply by opposition or square with mutual reception, it will be only with hard labor, difficulties ย and efford.

So, where does the clientโ€™s money come from?

  • The 2nd house is ruled by Mars, who is in the 1st house, a placement which indicates wealth obtained by the querentโ€™s own effort, but nevertheless relatively easily. Nevertheless, Mars is a malefic and will add something of his nature, some kind of thorn.
  • Mars rules the 7th house, to the wealth come from his wife. Mars is angular, granting him a steady income. Mars is close to Spica, describing a high income.
  • Venus, the 2nd house of the querentโ€™s wife (her income) is dignified in the 10th
  • The 10th house ruler Moon (profession) transfers light from Mercury (trade) to Venus: Lilly advises him that he might make money by buying and selling, as a tradesman.

Letโ€™s now see the most important detail of this question…When will he (finally) become rich?

Here the planetary speed comes into play: five planets are swift in motion and all are either in the ACย  or in the oriental (eastern) part of the chart, all indications, that his desire will soon be realized.

  • Mars is 2ยฐ distance from the AC .
  • The Moon is 6ยฐ25โ€™ distance from her conjunction with Venus

Since the horary regards long-term developments, Lilly uses years as the most appropriate timeframe.

Lillyโ€™s conclusion was that his client would have a property after 2 years, either by means of his wife (Mars 7th ruler) or by his own effort (Mars in the 1st house).

After 6 years he would have increased his estates with the help of his friends or acquaintances: Venus, the promise of fortune, is located in the 11th house of friends.

Everything looks so easy, when Lilly does it…

[1] This normally refers to the benefics, but also Mercury, swift and essentially strong in a good house might be used here.

[3] Logically, this kind of โ€œgood rankโ€ depends on the initial status of the querent: a simple miner would consider โ€œwell beingโ€ differently from a banker.
