Claudius or Aelius Galenus was born in 129 B.C.E at Pergamon, capital of the ancient region of Mysia, nowadays the Turkish Izmir province (Anatolya). At his time, Pergamum was part of the Greek empire and the location of one on the most influential Asclepius temples of the region.
